Runners' Affair - Overview
Overview
How do I start training? When should I start training? Do I know what I need to know before I start training?
Are these questions running across your mind for your first 10K, half-marathon or full-marathon? The Runners' Affair can help answer these questions.
The Runners' Affair Seminar series is organized to help reach out to all new and intermediate endurance runners who want to compete in their first long-distance event. This series of 3 seminars is targeted to help you better prepare for your race. It is not just about finishing your race but more importantly, finishing well. Topics covered range from training techniques to injury prevention, from the type of footwear to nutrition.
To complement the seminars, there is a series of clinics to guide you through your training regime and to help keep you motivated and on track to finish your race.

Proper Running BioMechanics

No more than 20 participants for each clinic.

Topics covered at the clinics/workshops:
Proper Running Technique and Form Learn effective running techniques and form that will take you further and faster. Come prepared with your running attire and shoes to have your running techniques and form fine-tuned.
Importance of Nutrition and Hydration Pay attention to your nutritional and hydration needs before, during, and after training. Fuel your body well and you will perform well!
Experience a training session that will give you a glimpse of The First Stride and Go the Distance programs.

Circuit Training for Strength and Flexibility

Dr Patrick Goh is a Sports Physician with SportsMed Central. He was formerly the Deputy Director (Sports Medicine) with the Singapore Sports Council's (SSC) Sports Medicine and Research Centre until he left for private practice in 2005. His patients have included many of Singapore's top athletes, and he was chief medical officer for the Singapore Contingent for two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004), and two Commonwealth Games (1998 and 2002). He was team physician for Singapore's national soccer team during their victorious 1994 Malaysia Cup season, and team physician in numerous South-East-Asian games.

Calvin Sim is a Senior Sports Physiotherapist with Back2Sports. He graduated with a Master of Manual Therapy from UWA. He has always been actively involved in sports, being the team physiotherapist for the National Football Academy Under-18 team, National Soccer Team, and was part of the team of physiotherapists providing coverage for the SCC International Rugby 7s, to name a few. Being a former school track and field athlete, he strongly believes in strengthening to prevent injury.

G Elangovan is a certified IAAF Level 1 Running coach and also a winner of the Standard Charted Singapore Marathon from 2003-2006. He has been coaching long distance runners for about 6 years now and has produced a number of age-group champions in the National Schools Cross Country Championships and National Schools Track and Field Meets. He has also been the recipient of the Sports Councils Coaches' Recognition Award from 2004-2006.

Adrian Mok is an Ironman triathlete. Last year, Adrian was one of the prime movers behind the Singapore Ironman 70.3 Triathlon and this year his debuts the adidas Sundown Marathon, Singapore's first night race.
In 2002, He was part of the team in Singapore who attempted the Eco Challenge in Fiji, which is commonly known as the toughest race on earth. His most recent achievement includes representing Singapore for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in 2004. In 2005, he attempted a 168km run around Singapore and also completing the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km ultra-marathon event.

Dr Tan Swee Kheng is a Kinesiologist and movement specialist. She obtained her Doctorate of Philosophy in Kinesiology from Michigan State University, USA. She is an advocate for encouraging individual's participation in sports. For three years, she has conducted an exclusive running program just for women - The First Stride, to demystify training processes to help women achieve their running potentials with great emphasis on proper running techniques and form. Due to numerous requests, Dr Tan has just launched a running program for men - Go the Distance, with similar emphasis as The First Stride. Dr Tan was also formerly a national hockey player who started playing hockey at the age of 8. She was part of the team that won the first and to date only gold medal for Singapore Women's Hockey during the 1993 South East Asian Games.

Tan Tse Yong is presently F1 Recreation Fitness Management Pte Ltd's director of operations of gyms. Tse Yong has a diploma in Sports and Wellness Management with merit, and was awarded with the Football Association Singapore (FAS) Gold medal for excellent academic performance in the year 2004. He also holds Certificates in Sport Massage, Australia Strength and Conditioning Association Level 1 and Fitness Instructor by Singapore Sports Council. He is actively involved in the supervision of the staff fitness programs and teaching practical lessons to Sports and Wellness Management students. Tse Yong had successfully crafted and implemented the Personal Fitness Solution (PFS) for the NYP Staff Fitness Studio, which impacted over 200 NYP staff and had assisted the polytechnic in clinching the H.E.A.L.T.H GOLD Award in the area of physical fitness. His Interest is in track and field. He represented Singapore combined School during his school days and currently holds seven National Junior College's Track records for the past 11 years.
